Submitted on: December 14, 1993 Jim Perley, a professor at the College of Wooster and currently on sabbatical at UC/Berkeley, is running for national President of AAUP as an openly gay candidate and seeks our support. The AAUP elections will be held by mail ballot next March, with the results due in by April 1. Jim writes, "One of my commitments, if I am elected President, is to bring new energy to the mission of examining the issues that adversely affect gay, lesbian and bisexual faculty members by appointing new members to the ad-hoc committee which has not functioned with the vigor I would have liked and charge them with writing a new section of the Red Book which specifically deals with these issues." Jim has corresponded with me in the past in his efforts to gather information from members of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community so that the AAUP could respond more thoughtfully and meaningfully to the needs of these members of the profession whose needs had not been adequately been addressed. At a recent Collective Bargaining Congress meeting in Washington, Jim talked about these concerns with Jean Thorensen from Eastern Connecticut State University, and he has asked asked her to Chair the newly invigorated committee if he's elected. Professor Thorensen has expressed a willingness to do this. She will be pleased to answer inquiries at 203-456-5280. Jim seeks the support in the upcoming election from members of the academic community who are gay, lesbian or bisexual. In order to vote, one must be a member of the Association by January 1, 1994. You may reach Jim directly at jperley@nature.berkeley.edu (Jim Perley) I don't know the other candidates. It is good to have promises such as Jim's.
