Date: Wed, 26 Jan 1994 18:45:05 -0800 (PST) From: Robert j Lafont Subject: GAY TV The Gay & Lesbian News Magazine is a Public Access television program that airs in Los Angeles once a week. The "News" is also aired in Sacramento, and Winipeg Canada. We are negotiating with St. Louis MO, Portland MA, Lafayette AK, San Francisco CA and Hawaii. Our format allows us to bring the viewers personalities and events that are of interest to Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals. While we produce the program in Los Angeles, every effort is made to make the show "feel" universal. We are sensitive to and understand criticisms made about some New York programing about being "too New York". The last thing that we want to hear is that the "News" is "too L.A.". Last year our field pieces included The Gay Pride Parades & Festivals of Long Beach, South Bay, Los Angeles, Orange County and Palm Springs, The 1993 March on Washington, The GLAAD media awards, A Tribute to Richard Rouilard by National Gay & Lesbian Journalists, AIDS Health Care Foundation tribute to Art Torres, National Coming Out Day, Shanti tribute to Peter Allen with Lilly Tomlin, AMFAR fashion show with Madonna and many more. The Gay & Lesbian News Magazine has been in production for four years and the recipient of four cable excellence awards, two of which are for best overall series. We are produced by volunteers and funded by donations. We are looking to expand our viewing audience and here is what we have in mind. 1. Contact the people who are making Gay & Lesbian TV in your community. Have them contact "The News" to initiate a cultural exchange of programming. We are planning on networking at the Stonewall 25 celebration so make sure they get the message. 2. If you have no local programming call us we'll work with to get your own program on the air. It's is not hard to do. It just takes some effort by a few motivated people, and is often very cheap or free, depending on your local community rules. We've been doing it for quite a while and can give you plenty of tips and tricks. 3. Subscribe to the Gay & Lesbian News. for only $20.00 an episode we'll send you programing that will entertain and motivate people in your community to start your own series. GLAAD Denver uses "The News" to show the people in the community what great work that they can accomplish on their own. 4. There is no better way to come OUT to your town than on TV. The RRR has hundreds of radio and TV transmitters and they bash us almost constantly on them. We can use public access cable in much the same way to show America who we really are. We must stop letting them define us, we must define ourselves and OUR agenda. Recently they distributed thousands of slick, commercially produced videos to Congress and the Pentagon lying about our "agenda". When in fact we had never gathered to form an agenda, until now! Our agenda must include the truth about Gays. The truth that you already know. That we are some of the most wonderful people on the face of the earth. That our children commit suicide at astronomical rates because they are abused by their bigoted parents and "friends". That we will not sit back and watch our people die to bashing, suicide and AIDS without a fight.
