              "OPEN TO THE PUBLIC" GOES ON-LINE


WASHINGTON, May 3:  Public broadcasting listeners and viewers can now
use electronic mail to register their comments directly with the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting's "Open to the Public" initiative.

Effective today, the Internet e-mail address for CPB's public
response line is "comments@soul.cpb.org".

Submissions to the on-line service will be acknowledged by e-mail.

"Open to the Public" was launched in January 1993.  It includes a
toll-free telephone line and a dedicated post office box.  In
addition, CPB has conducted town meetings in various cities and
sponsored a national poll to assess public perceptions of public
broadcasting's programming quality, diversity, and balance.

The results of "Open to the Public" are presented to Congress in an
annual report.  They also are shared with the public broadcasting
community and other interested observers.
