My column, which began May 8, 1992 in the Detroit News, is the first of its kind in mainstream journalism. It's syndicated through Gannett and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate and appears in such diverse communities as Atlanta, Minneapolis, Chicago, San Jose, San Francisco, Niagara Falls, Honolulu, Guam, Des Moines, Nashville, El Paso, Springfield, Mo., and Muskogee, Ok. Often my column is off the news, such as gays in the military or Hawaii's steps to legalize same-sex marriage. But just as often I write about my nine-year relationship with Joyce Murdoch. I write about our life as a couple because most of my readers don't know anyone gay. For them, Joyce and I become the first gay people they come to know. For my gay readers, I write the column I always wanted to read: I wanted to be entertained, not offended; talked to, not about; informed, not maligned; inspired, not demoralized. Joyce and I are now writing a book -- to be published Spring 1995 by Doubleday -- which will include the first 18 months of columns and the story of their impact. If you'd like to read my column in your town's daily newspaper, please call me -- 301-270-1594 -- or write -- Deb Price, The Detroit News, 1148 National Press Building; Washington, D.C., 20045. Cheers, Deb.
