Date: Fri, 25 Mar 94 11:59:38 EST From: "alistair williamson" Subject: New Gay and Lesbian Journal: 2nd issue forthcoming! Bearing the motto "Just Great Writing," the Harvard Gay and Lesbian Review, a quarterly and cultural journal directed to "literate non- specialists," has been launched in Boston under the leadership of editor and Harvard University alumnus Richard Schneider, Jr. The Review is available in bookstores nationally or by subscription. According to Schneider, who received his Ph.D. in sociology, "The Harvard Gay and Lesbian Review will be a major new journal, filling a publishing niche left empty by current gay and lesbian publications. The Review is sort of a New York Review of Books or New Yorker for gay people." Of interest to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, queers, and straight people, The Review will offer intellectually stimulating, non-academic writing about subjects with more depth than many gay publications. The Review will publish essays, reviews, poetry, and art, but not short fiction. Submissions are welcome and no Harvard affiliation is necessary. The new journal's premier issue includes the memoir "My Harvard," by renowned gay novelist, columnist, and former Harvard undergraduate Andrew Holleran; an essay on the politics of sexual identity by lesbian psychologist April Martin, author of "The Lesbian and Gay Parenting Handbook"; and an interview with author Blanche McCrary Boyd. The cover bears essayist and reviewer Reed Woodhouse's penetrating critical discussion, "Five Houses of Gay Fiction," on works by Baldwin, Isherwood, McCauley, Dellassandro, and Holleran. Also included are book reviews, poetry, and original art. Currently in production, the spring issue will feature controversial author and lecturer Camille Paglia on "Where Gay Boys Come From." Edouard Fontenot interviews lesbian feminist biblical scholar Bernadette Brooten, who discusses her new book on female homoeroticism and the early Christian church. On the lighter side, Funny Gay Male Jaffe Cohen discusses "My Life as a Christian." Book reviews include a look at two anthologies edited by John Preston: FLESH AND THE WORD, and FLESH AND THE WORD 2. The Review is underwritten by the Open Gate, a non-profit, alumni-sponsored fund for gay and lesbian life at Harvard. Subscriptions are $16 per year ($25 overseas) (4 issues) by writing to: HGLR P.
