Date: Thu, 14 Dec 1995 10:27:04 -0800 (PST) From: Timberg Timothy Davidc For your information, There is a new book out, "Restricted Entry: Censorship on Trial." The book chronicle's the 10 year history of a lesbian and gay book store, Little Sister's of Vancouver, B.C., fight against censorship. They have taken the Canadian Government to court over their policy of 'prior restraint,' using the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The case revolves around s.2, Freedom of Expression, and s.15, Equality provision. "Restricted Entry" is the story of Little Sister's batle to end Custom's ongoing harassment of gay and lesbian authors and booksellers. In the final months of 1994, the lawsuit was played out in provincial Supreme Court with all the intensity of an old-fashioned obscenity trial. The courtroom drama pitted bookseller versus vice squad, artist vs. psychologist, author vs. bureaucrat. Anne Scales, Sarah Schulman, Carole Vance and Pat Califia, among many others, testified in the fight for an end to censorship of minority cultures and in defence of all people's right to choose what they will or will not read.
