This is an 8 hr/wk, 9 month internship beginning in September. The position is part of a program collaboration between the Bay Area GSA Network and the Pacific Center. The GSA Outreach Worker reports to the Director of Bay Area GSA Network. RESPONSIBILITIES: o Work and communicate with Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) and straight ally youth to develop program ideas and direction. o Work with youth and encourage them to be empowered leaders in their communities. o Provide support for currently existing GSAs through email, phone calls, and on-site visits. o Support students, teachers, and administrators in their efforts to start new GSAs, particularly in Oakland public schools. o Assist GSAs in coordinating social, educational and advocating activities at their high schools. o Assist GSAs with outreach to LGBTQ and straight ally youth at their school. o Help provide marketing and advertising for GSA activities and events. o Help organize Oakland/East Bay youth leadership trainings, network events, and social gatherings for youth involved in GSAs. o Help initiate Youth of Color workshops or trainings that address diversity issues in Oakland GSAs and encourage safety and inclusion. o Other duties as assigned by supervisor. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: o Ability to relate with and understand LGBTQ youth and their straight allies. o Ability to relate with youth from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds. o Volunteer or work experience with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. o Experience in providing direct service work with LGBTQ youth. o Excellent written and oral communication skills. o Ability to work both as a team member and independently. o Experience with grassroots community organizing and multi-issue organizing a plus. ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTIONS: The Pacific Center is a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community services center in the East Bay. The Bay Area GSA Network, a project of the Tides Center, is a youth-led organization that empowers youth activists fighting homophobia in schools. COMPENSATION AND SCHEDULE o $7.50/hour, 8/hr week internship; flexible schedule. o 9 month internship, during school months (September through June) o This internship is funded through the Pacific Center's Oakland Fund for Children and Youth grant and is subcontracted to the Tides Center, fiscal sponsor of the Bay Area GSA Network. The Gay teen, a 15-year-old male, is said to be recovering from a life-threatening head wound that required brain surgery and the installation of a metal plate in his skull.
