It reads in part, "the instruction of behaviors relating to homosexuality and bisexuality shall not be presented in a public school in a manner which encourages, promotes or sanctions such behaviors." It also calls for sanctions of withholding public funds from schools that do not comply. Opposing the OCA is Basic Rights Oregon. Maura Roche, its legislative consultant, said her group is sure OCA will gather the needed 67,000 signatures before the July 7 deadline. The Oregon affiliate of the Christian Coalition is helping OCA and sent out petitions in an end-of-year membership mailing. Roche stated her group is gearing up for the expected fight. "Prior to the initiative qualifying, the campaign structure will be put in place to defeat it," she said. "A campaign steering committee has been formed and a campaign manager will be hired. There will be a media message component and a strong field component." Once people understand how misleading the initiative is, Roche added, they will vote against it. The OCA has a history of failed anti-gay initiatives. In 1992 and 1994 it succeeded in gathering enough signatures to place ballot measures amending the state constitution to ban discrimination protection based on sexual orientation, but voters rejected both. OCA's anti-gay marriage petition drive in 1998 failed to gather enough signatures to go to a vote. Contact Roche at 503-222-6151 for more information. Your Tax Dollars at Work'' and "School Life Threatening to Gays''! These ads were in the March 18 Capital Times and State Journal. Another three cheers to Alliance for Life Ministries, which researched the facts for these ads. Finally, an organization that isn't afraid to speak the truth, and it speaks it without getting personal! I imagine, because of these ads, Alliance for Life and Madison Newspapers will draw a lot of fire from homosexual activists. Those who might take offense at these ads should ask themselves one question: "Why do I take offense to factual information?'' John Baierl, Madison Letter: Spending on anti-gay ads is a shameful waste of money I just received news from my sister that a friend of hers recently ended his life. For all practical purposes, hate killed him. My sister's friend was gay and lived in South Dakota. As he struggled to accept his homosexuality, his family chose to reject him. His church's response was to demand that he change his orientation. To "help'' him out, church members basically stalked him to help him become straight. It didn't work. My sister's friend succeeded in ending his life after two previous attempts failed. He died feeling rejected. The funeral was the day before some hate ads ran in the State Journal and in the Capitol Times. The ads were placed by a so-called religious group and sought to link AIDS with gays and place AIDS in competition with other diseases. Along with this ad was an ad claiming that reports of lesbian and gay students being hurt in schools was a lie. I must offer sympathy to those who chose to place the ads. What a shame that the money spent to broadcast hate could have been used to feed the hungry and help the youth of our community as they struggle with the question of who they are. The folks from this group surely won't be there to help those who are questioning just who they are. But the people from this group should know this: I will! Daniel Fauth, Madison ================================================================================ Jean Richter -- richter@eecs.berkeley.edu The P.E.R.S.O.N.
