If school officials everywhere are not familiar with the name Jamie Nabozny, they should get acquainted with it immediately. In 1996, Nabozny was awarded $900,000 in an out-of-court settlement with the Ashland School District in northern Wisconsin, which he had sued for not doing enough to protect him against students who for two years taunted, harassed and beat him because he is gay. Nabozny's court victory was the first-ever federal trial against a school district for "not protecting'' a student.
