The PSA, which begins with screen text reading "Fighting Words," shifts to a series of young men menacingly approaching the screen, shouting "That's so gay!," "Fag!," "You're a queer, aren't you?," "Queer!" and "Faggot!" The camera shifts to Judy Shepard, standing in a classroom. "The next time you say these things," she implores, "think about what they really mean." The screen then shows a picture of Matthew Shepard, followed by the words "Murdered - Because He Was Gay," and closing with the simple words, "End Hate." The PSA, adopted by MTV as part of its ongoing "Fight For Your Rights: Take a Stand Against Violence" campaign, is currently airing at least six times a day in prime timeslots, and is reaching an estimated 30 to 45 million people per week. It represents an extraordinary opportunity to reach out to the very youth targeted by messages saying it's alright to discriminate and harass lesbian and gay men. The PSA shows in no uncertain terms the harm wrought on real people by such hateful words. MTV is to be applauded for this important contribution to the education of all our youth. AFA ACTION ALERT 10/14/99 American Family Association <>< Dr. Donald E. Wildmon, President Tim Wildmon, Vice President P.O. Drawer 2440 Tupelo, Mississippi 38803 Telephone 601/844-5036 URL's http://www.afa.net http://www.afr.net http://www.afo.net +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Online version of this ALERT: http://www.afa.net/ala/index.htm +++++++++++++++++++++++++ PORN AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY: IT'S EVERYBODY'S PROBLEM ****New AFA video confronts dangerous library policies ****Radical policies from American Library Association exposed A new video produced by AFA warns parents that their kids may not be safe in the local library because of policies that allow even children unrestricted access to pornography. That extreme policy flows out of the American Library Association (ALA), a private organization that has a virtual death grip on how many public libraries are run. The ALA is the largest national library association in the world, with a membership of more than 55,000. The ALA is scrutinized in the video, which is entitled "Excess Access: Are Your Children Safe in the Public Library?" It uses both drama and interviews with experts who have analyzed the growing power of the group, and documents the dangers that ALA policies can yield. "Excess Access" is the second video produced by AFA this year. The first, "Suffer the Children: Answering the Homosexual Agenda in Public Schools," http://www.afa.net/alert/aa990617b.htm ] was a huge success, with AFA distributing in excess of 9,000 copies. "We hope to get the word out on the ALA with this latest video because we are very concerned by the influence this organization has and the damage they can cause our nation's children," said AFA Vice President Tim Wildmon. The ALA opposes any restrictions on access to pornography in public libraries--even for children. Many public libraries adhere to this ALA policy, and refuse to place filters on their computers to screen out sexually explicit websites. The written policy at the Los Angeles Public Library, for example, says, "As with other library materials, supervision of a child's use of the Internet is the responsibility of a parent or legal guardian." So extreme are the views of the organization that ALA spokeswoman Judith Krug said, "Blocking material leads to censorship. That goes for pornography and bestiality too. If you don't like it, don't look at it." Wildmon said that libraries are not excluded from sharing responsibility for the welfare for our children. "Libraries must once again become part of the community, helping parents to uphold the standards of decency that keep our children safe," he said. "Citizens must actively seek to break the ALA's chokehold on the library system." "Excess Access" can be ordered online https://secure.afo.net/afa/excessaccess.htm ] or by calling 1-888-FAMILIES (option #4). A donation of $20 is suggested. "How safe is your public library?"
