It's so hard to actually take risks in the name of tolerance. That's why Monday's Page 1 story about straight teens who show solidarity with their gay and lesbian classmates is so encouraging. As the Moscow School District nurse, she's fielded questions about abortion, contraceptives and AIDS from fifth- and sixth-grade students in her human health and development classes. But Volkening only does so with the utmost caution. Gay and lesbian people are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles in all our families. In Denmark during World War II, the king declared all the residents Jews to combat the pressure to isolate and destroy a segment of the Danish society. In Idaho, the message we receive from our so-called leaders is one of isolation and ostracism, the message promotes ignorance and prejudice. The next time Idaho is portrayed in the national media as a center for intolerance and bigotry, our officials' denials will ring hollow. I probably won't be awake to see "It's Elementary"; it's been moved past my bedtime, and my teen-age daughters' as well. I resent the implication by the self-appointed moral watchdogs and elected officials that I can't be trusted to watch this film or discuss it with my children. I find the uproar offensive and an embarrassment. My family values all our members. That's what real family values are all about. - STEFANIE DASH MARVEL, Hailey ================================================================================= Jean Richter -- richter@eecs.berkeley.edu The P.E.R.S.O.N.
