Lambda is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV/AIDS, through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. The organization was founded in New York in 1973. In addition to its National Headquarters, Lambda has a Western Regional Office in Los Angeles, a Midwest Regional Office in Chicago, and a Southern Regional Office in Atlanta. Lambda's focus is on precedent-setting, test case, and policy work with broad impact. Our present docket consists of cases in a wide range of areas, including equal employment rights and benefits; sodomy law reform; youth issues as well as those faced by older lesbians and gay men; discrimination in housing, public benefits; access to healthcare and AIDS-related treatments; and child custody and visitation. Lambda plays a key role in challenges to government actions that violate the constitutional rights of lesbians, gay men, or people with HIV. Staff attorneys are involved in many facets of policy work, as well as all aspects of litigation. This includes advocacy with officials and agencies responsible for policy and programs, as well as litigating cases, writing amicus briefs, organizing amicus strategies, and providing support and back-up to Lambda's network of cooperating attorneys. Staff attorneys also consult with lawyers throughout the country who are handling cases related to our work. Attorneys frequently deliver speeches or conference presentations, speak to reporters, and participate in television and radio programs. Some travel is required. Responsibilities: The attorney in this position will focus on issues faced by lesbian and gay youth in foster care. Lambda has undertaken an ambitious agenda in this area. We aim to develop recommendations on policies and services that will address the unmet needs of these youth, and to advocate for the adoption of these policies in target locations, while also exploring potential litigation to address the needs of this neglected population. Qualifications: Applicants should have a minimum of four years litigation and policy experience; experience working with foster care issues, child protective services, the juvenile justice system, youth; or related experience working with the homeless or in HIV prevention. Commitment to the rights of lesbians, gay men and those with HIV; excellent legal writing and speaking skills required. Compensation: Salary DOE, plus excellent benefits, including employer contribution to retirement account. My new book - "Friends and Family: True Stories of Gay America' s Straight Allies" -- is out. It took me a year to write and my publisher a year to design the jacket, but hey, that's how publishing works. I'm very excited about this book - I think it could have even more impact than "School's Out" and "Jocks" (though the cover is nowhere near as hot). I've profiled over 40 straight men, women and teenagers who are doing incredible things in and for the gay community, in areas ranging from religion, the military and law to cyberspace, the Boy Scouts, AIDS, politics, even transgender. Nearly all of the stories involve, in at least some way, youth. For example, there are stories of a Utah couple, parents of two gay kids, who are battling the Mormon Church; a woman whose son was tormented on a military base, and who fought on his behalf all the way to the Pentagon; the former police chief of Portland, who marched for gay rights even before he knew his daughter was a lesbian; the lead attorney of the Hawaii marriage case, who is handling the case virtually pro bono simply because he sees it as an issue of social justice; a mother who has organized an Internet site for gay kids and parents; two grandmothers who are working to get homophobic Jesse Helms out of the Senate, even a straight 14-year-old Eagle Scout who is taking on the homophobic Boy Scouts. It was an incredibly intriguing project to undertake, and I think the results are both inspiring and important - for gay and straight people alike. "Friends and Family" is sthe first book to tell the stories of straight allies who go far beyond "acceptance," and are working hard every day to make the world a safer, saner place for all gays and lesbians. I hope you'll pass along word of "Friends and Family" to anyone who might be interested: libraries, PFLAG chapters, allies at schools and universities, your own friends and family, whomever. (Let 'em know I'm available for speaking engagements too!). Unfortunately, I can't offer you a freebie - authors get only six free copies (!) - but it is available at all Barnes & Nobles, Borders and gay bookstores; through www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com, or directly from my publisher's Web site (www.alyson.com). The ISBN number is 1-55583-491-4.
