The theme of this year's conference is "Teaching Respect for All" and more than 65 skillsbuilding workshops, trainings and panels will address a multitude of topics of concern to students, educators and administrators from schools across the country. U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) will give the keynote address and actor-comedian Margaret Cho will give a special performance as part of the programming for the event. Since the 1960s, when Lewis organized historic sit-in demonstrations in the deep South and chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Lewis has maintained a prominent role in the civil rights arena. Cho is currently touring her one-woman show, "I'm the One That I Want," which played to sold-out crowds in New York earlier this year. In many cases, youth of color and rural youth have fewer opportunities to pursue this involvement. To this end, NYAC, in partnership with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Gill Foundation, will make the Creating Change conference as accessible for young people as possible through a limited scholarship fund. If you are 22 years or younger and are interested in applying for the Creating Change Youth of Color and Rural Youth Scholarship, please complete this form and mail or fax to: NYAC Creating Change Scholarship Application; 1638 R Street, NW; Suite 300; Washington, DC 20009 or Fax 202-319-7365. Applications must be received in the NYAC office no later than October 4, 1999. Please do not direct scholarship inquiries or mail applications to NGLTF. For more information about the conference itself, please call Sue Hyde, NGLTF's Director of Creating Change, at 617-492-6393. Information is also available at www.creatingchange.org. We will contact you to let you know if NYAC is able to provide you with a scholarship. This application does not mean you will automatically receive a scholarship. Notification of scholarship awards will begin on October 8, 1999. Please allow NYAC staff adequate time to get back to you regarding the status of your scholarship application. NYAC recognizes the skills of young people to utilize their own resources in raising funds. The more you are able to raise, the more youth will be able to attend Creating Change! NYAC expects every applicant to use their resourcefulness to raise a portion of their costs for Creating Change.
