They have a new show "Teen Files: the Truth About Sex" that will be airing the same day, probably before the one on hate. The article I wrote about my experience is posted at http://members.tripod.com/~claytoly/gc_teenfiles.html There is a website with lots of information about this series of specials is at http://www.teenissues.com/ and they should have stations listed there and when the shows are scheduled. Seattle, Washington : "God's Perfect Hate," a 56-minute television program about bias hate crimes legislation in America is scheduled for release in October 1999 in conjunction with the one year anniversary of Matthew Shepard's murder. The Washington Association of Churches (WAC) is the sponsor and fiscal agent for Lizard Productions, the Seattle based digital video production company owned by Producer Liz Latham and Editor, Dodi Favors. WAC recently received a $3,000 grant from The Harburg Foundation of New York which financed the purchase of a brand new digital editing system for the production of this television show. The newly acquired Promax Studio Core editing system will enable the film's editors to digitally master this important program for national television broadcasts and mass educational distribution. "The Shooting Schedule" * Traveled to Florida in February and interviewed author and University of Florida Professor Emeritus, David Mark Chalmers, leading historian on the Ku Klux Klan and author of the book, "Hooded Americanism." * Shot footage of the Reverend Fred Phelps, religious anti-gay hate monger, protesting outside the courthouse during the first Matthew Shepard murder trial in Laramie, WY. * Bill Powers and I interviewed Gabi Clayton, whose son Bill Clayton chose to end his life shortly after he and a friend were brutally beaten in a bloody assault based on bias hatred outside of his own high school in Olympia, Washington. * In July we interviewed Mike Hogan, Sr. Deputy Prosecutor and founding father of the King County Prosecutors Bias Hate Crimes Unit. Mike shared his experience prosecuting bias crimes at the local level and discussed differences in Bias Hate Crime legislation across our nation. * At the end of August, we hope to interview Elizabeth Birch, Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign and work with her to focus the message of Bias Hate Crimes Legislation at the national level. Here's How You Can Help Now! 1.) Pledge to raise or contribute a $1,000+ gift toward completion of the shooting schedule. 2.) Host a house party fund-raiser and promote dialogue about the film. 3.) Mail, fax, or email the enclosed classified advertisement to every organization, membership, society, church, government or school association you are affiliated with and ask them to place this ad in their next newsletter. 4.) Call me directly at (206) 782-8220 and tell me who you think we should be interviewing that we haven't yet and then help us find the transportation to get there. 5.) Donate or ask friends to donate frequent flyer miles for 2 RT tickets to various shoots across the U.S. If your friend is a "big time" airline executive - ask them to donate tickets for a full thank you slate in the film's credits. Same goes for hotel and car rentals. 6.) Contact me if you are on a first name basis with decision makers at national television broadcast or cable stations. We want a guaranteed air slot to reach the largest audience. A movie was made about his fight for blacks against white supremacists. The SPLC has successfully brought civil charges against the KKK, etc., forcing them to pay monetary damages to victims for inciting violence. This sometimes bankrupts the KKK chapters, forcing them out of business. The teaching tolerance program includes gays & lesbians as well as racial and religious minorities. Below is a list of resources for teaching tolerance available through the non-profit Southern Poverty Law Center. A new resource will be mailed this summer to 110,000 school principals, "Responding to Hate at School: A Guide for Teachers, Counselors, and Administrators." You may also get it free if you have school letterhead or for a minimal cost if you don't. Perhaps you can take these some of these materials to your administrators, principals, parents, teachers, etc. and/or use them yourself.
