PRESS RELEASE JUNE 8, 1999 For More Information Contact: Stephanie Berger, 510-601-1806 Host Committee Voice Mail, 510/834-6333 OAKLAND, June 10, 1999--Oakland and Bay Area activists are gearing up for the Twelfth Annual Creating Change Conference, the country's largest and most exciting annual gathering of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender movement. Creating Change 1999 will take place at the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel, November 10-14. The annual conference is expected to attract over 2200 activists and organizers from around the country. A local host committee is already at work, under the leadership of Michiko Bailey, Yosenio Lewis, Karin Swann and Jonathan Winters. Creating Change wears a well-earned reputation as the political hothouse of our movement, featuring plenary sessions on contemporary issues, 150 workshops and training sessions, and social and cultural events that bring out-of-town visitors in contact with denizens of the host community. Creating Change has been the launching pad of many significant new projects and initiatives, including: the launch of Boycott Colorado in 1992; the 1993 youth "uprising" in Durham, which led to the creation of the National Youth Advocacy Coalition; the bisexual & transgender visibility action in 1996 which led to the National Ad Hoc Bi and Trans Coalition; and the kickoff of the state-by-state campaign Equality Begins at Home in 1998. This year's Creating Change Conference will be greatly influenced by its location in Oakland. Because California is preparing for the Knight Initiative vote in 2000, a special training entitled "Defeat Knight: Door-Knock in Your Community" will teach the electoral skill and the human art of door-to-door voter identification and persuasion. As well, organizers are planning many workshops that will reflect the distinctive political and cultural character of the Bay Area. A group of local activists already are contributing to the organizing of the conference through the 1999 Creating Change Host Committee. Over 50 people gathered at the Host Committee's first meeting in late February and continue to meet and work on various aspects of conference logistics and programming. Subcommittees will concentrate on Volunteers, community housing, youth and elder support, spiritual needs, organizational outreach, accessibility, and hospitality. The Host Committee meets on the Second Tuesday of each month (through August) at 7:00 PM at the Oakland Marriott City Center, 12th and Broadway in Oakland, across the street from the City Center BART station. The 1999 Creating Change Conference is also supported by the Pacific Center for Human Growth of Berkeley, which will serve as the anchor organization for the Host Committee. In this capacity, the Pacific Center will assist the Host Committee by providing a postal address, financial and accounting services, and additional outreach to the community. To learn how to get involved with the 1999 Creating Change Host Committee, call 510/834-6333.
