(Rita Addessa 215 772-2001 and/or Larry Gross, Ph.D. at 215-898-5620) To Sisters and Brothers In Philadelphia, Delaware and New Jersey: It would be great if you would add your voice to ours on this short-term issue and longer-term issues around which we struggle (pleasantly at the moment) with Bill Marrazzo, new CEO at WHYY INC. The Good News -- WHYY will air ITS ELEMENTARY on June 22 1999 at 10 pm. The Not Yet Good News - WHYY has not followed through on our request to air the program with a relevant discussion panel on both television and radio. More facts follow together with contact information. In February 1999, the Task Force convened a meeting with Marrazzo new CEO at WHYY (Philadelphia, PA public television/radio). At that meeting we provided an analysis of local commentators T. Gross and M. Moss-Coane' s programming attention to lesbian and gay issues --- in sum - nominal. Within their nominal programming, race and gender hierarchies prevailed (a copy of the report is at www.op.net/plgtf) or available by mail (215-772-2001). The full report includes a list of recommendations which relate to structure, employment, independent productions, and expanded minority-owned and directed public interest programming channels, programming, and formats. Since this first meeting, WHYY has paid increased attention to lesbian and gay issues including their now publicized June 22, 1999 broadcast of ITS ELEMENTARY. We have and will again strongly recommend that they host a companion radio program and television "special " with appropriate education advocates including the Task Force to explore and connect local equity struggles. A copy of adopted Pennsylvania education equity policies is on our web site. (more...) PLEASE keep up the pressure on Marrazzo, CEO WHYY INC to improve dramatically their programming commitment and to cooperate in this particular request.
