Help make it possible for hundreds of queer and straight-ally youth in Sacramento to lobby for change. What is Youth Lobby Day? Youth Lobby Day is a day for LGBT and straight-ally youth across California to come to Sacramento and make sure that legislators hear about the real-life issues that affect LGBT youth: harassment, discrimination, hate crimes, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, and more. It is a day to educate the politicians...to hold them accountable and to demand action in this legislative session. It is also a day for participants to learn about the political process and about how to become an important part of it. Who can get participate? LGBT and straight-ally youth 23 years old or younger. Regional organizers step up to the plate. LIFE Lobby sponsored this event in the past, but their demise means that others have to step into the breach. Organizers, community centers, LGBTRC, youth activists and concerned citizens across the state have pulled together to ensure that this important event doesn't disappear. Each region is responsible for travel arrangements and expenses, food expenses, printing and promotion of the event. It's a huge responsibility, but one they readily accepted, having attended this vital day and seeing the changes it creates in young people and in the legislature. Please help us make Youth Lobby Day 1999 the biggest and best ever Youth Lobby Day ever! By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH, The Capital-Journal Two of the teacher in-service instructors who taught a controversial session about tolerance toward gays and lesbian students addressed the Silver Lake Board of Education on Monday night about its subject matter. The course that was presented in an October Kaw Valley In-service program was titled, "The Silent and Invisible Minority: Addressing the Needs of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in Our Schools." Forty-one teachers attended the conference -- none of them were Unified School District 372 teachers. The concerns of some USD 372 teachers reached board members who requested that Superintendent Dr. Bob Albers write a letter to the Kaw Valley In-service asking for clarification of the course's content. USD 372 spends about $3,600 to belong to the Kaw Valley In-service and is considering other alternatives, such as allowing teachers to individually select courses in which they are interested. Forrest L. Swall, a professor emeritus at the University of Kansas, and his wife, Donna Swall, were two of the presenters at the Oct. 13 conference in Lawrence. Both are members of PFLAG, or Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The session included a panel of recent gay and lesbian high school graduates and parents of gay and lesbian students. The Swall's daughter came out when she was 21 and has been in as monogamous relationship since 1985. "We want to make things easy for other young people growing up," Forrest L. Swall said.
