CT: Report on "Children from the Shadows" conference ============================================================= From: GLSENCT Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 23:18:55 EST Subject: LGBT Youth Attend CT Conference Connecticut's fifth annual Children From the Shadows conference ("Getting Too Big for Our Niches"), co-sponsored by GLSEN Connecticut, the National Youth Advocacy Coaliton (NYAC), and True Colors, was held on March 20 and 21. The conference attracted over 560 participants on Friday--approximately 300 of whom were youth--and more than 420 on Saturday (about 200 youth). Despite Saturday's ice storm, Children From the Shadows had its biggest turnout ever! GLSEN Connecticut sold 86 copies of its recent publication, Tackling Gay Issues in School. A binder of 207 pages, Tackling Gay Issues is a comprehensive resource module, beginning with a rationale for the inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues in school; proceeding to teacher-friendly lesson plans; a guide to print, video, and online resources; and a series of extracurricular activities. Tackling Gay Issues in School was co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Connecticut and has received endorsements from the Connecticut State Department of Education, the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF), and GLSEN National. Currently reviewing the module for endoresement are Advocates for Youth, NYAC, the Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) and nationally known sexuality educators. Future printings should include these endorsements. If you are interested in one or more copies of the module (at $20 plus $3 shipping and handling per copy), please e-mail GLSENCT@aol.com. Nationally recognized presenters at Children From the Shadows included Ellen Bass, Warren Blumenfeld, Rea Carey, Verna Eggleston, Pat Griffin, Joyce Hunter, Ritch Savin-Williams, Robert Selverstone, and Sterling Stowell; GLSEN presenters--some of whom are also nationally recognized--included Wallace Bachman, Bob Brex, Deidre Cuffee-Gray, Frances Donovan, Michael Fiorello, Jim Klopfer, David Knapp, Deann LeBeau, Leif Mitchell, Patricia Nicolari, Tricia Raneri, and Dan Woog. We were thrilled to see attendees from GLSEN chapters in Boston, Maine, and upstate New York as well as so many Connecticut folk! ================================================================================ Jean Richter -- richter@eecs.berkeley.edu The P.E.R.S.O.N.
