FL: Film-making project empowers gay youth 3. Gay youth testimonials sought for GLAAD report ================================================================ From: SARATOGANY@aol.com Date: Fri, 1 Aug 1997 10:34:34 -0400 (EDT) Subject: NY: Videos Used for Public Library Series and Teacher In-Service The Coalition for Safer Schools and GLSTN-NY Saratoga Region Chapter used the following videos for the public library video series (4 nights) and teacher in-service training. Library: "Teaching Respect for All" (52 mins.) with Kevin Jennings, GLSTN National, Executive Director (available through GLSTN National with workbook) go to http://www.glstn.org........ or e-mail to glstn@glstn.org "Growing Up Gay" (57 mins.) by/with Brian McNaught "Homophobia In The Workplace" (57 mins.) by/with Brian McNaught (available through Lambda Rising Books and other GLBT bookstores "It's Elementary" Talking About Gay Issues In School" (78 mins.) Chasnoff/Cohen (available by sending e-mail to: wemdhc@aol.com jilldavey@aol.com and to, glpcinat@ix.netcom.com......also GLSTN chapters possibly may get a discount) "A Hate Crime In Houston: A Mother Seeks Justice" (58 mins.) Civil lawsuit in gay male murder case that involved 10 high school teenage boys. (available from COURT-TV) In-service: " The Safe Schools Program for Gay and Lesbian Students" (27 mins.) MA Dept of Education (available free, you provide blank tape, from MA DOE, email to..... kwestheimer@doe.mass.edu) " Teaching Respect For All" see above If we had the MA DOE video, I would have definitely used it in the library series.. It is excellent, especially for school staff and student viewing. Another video from GLSTN National is "Setting The Record Straight" (11 mins.), good for showing with "Teaching Respect for All". The use of the public library has some advantages: space is free many public libraries receive funding from school districts they can help you get the word out about the series (advertising, getting press and mailings to school unions and other school target audiences, is very important) public libraries tend to be allies of the GLBT community in that they have a similar foes regarding censorship ect. public libraries are plentiful (large and small) the advertising and press of the video series raises the public visibilty of the issues to many, including those who would not attend (watch for letters to the editor from the opposition and use this forum to your message out) Also, the libraries will accept shelving recommendations on GLBT educational videos and books that are available, if they are brought to their attention. I hope the above will be helpful towards ending gay bashing in schools and GLBT child abuse. Keep in mind that it is not only GLBT students who suffer from homophobia. Straight kids also suffer(i.e. rumors they are gay or lesbian, kids with a gay parent or gaurdian, kids with gay siblings and friends, kids windup in the criminal justice system due to their gay bashing). GLAAD is also searching for youth whose lives have been affected by Internet filtering software, whether it be not being able to access news, educational information or support information about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community to being thrown out or isolated by family due to an Internet filtering software's audit trail function. The information is being compiled for a research project. If you are interested in sharing your testimonial, please contact Loren Javier, GLAAD's Interactive Media Director, at javier@glaad.org. Also, when sending testimonial, please include your name (or a nickname), age and city and state in which you live. =================================================================== Jean Richter -- richter@eecs.berkeley.edu The P.E.R.S.O.N.
