ANYONE OUT THERE GOT THE DEFINITIVE FACTS AND FIGURES ON THIS?] Subj: Commissioner Antonucci's response re: safe schools Date: Wed, Jul 17, 1996 12:28 PM EDT From: Janice_B_Feldman@doe.mass.edu X-From: Janice_B_Feldman@doe.mass.edu (Janice B Feldman) To: Nancegar@aol.com Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns by email to Commissioner Antonucci. Commissioner Antonucci has been a leader, and continues to be a strong supporter, of the Safe Schools Program. For the next school year the Health protection funds, which will now support this program, have been cut by over $4 million dollars, which was 12% less than last year. We had to take cuts in all programs, and the cut to the safe schools program was approximately 8 %. The Safe Schools Program will now be served by two full time staff people instead of three. They will share statewide responsibilities and the western school districts will be served. The decision to reduce staff was made for monetary reasons, not performance. This is not the only program which was impacted by the budget cuts. --------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Short-lived Resolution B-9 of the National Education Association, which suggested that schools try to combat anti-LGB prejudice by holding a gay and lesbian history month, was repealed/rewritten at the July 1996 NEA Representative Assembly. Instead, NEA delegates at the convention in Washington, D.C., passed generic, broad tolerance and anti-discrimination declarations, trying to mollify conservative opposition from within and outside the organization. Resolution B-9 had been attacked by the fundamentalist group CWA (Concerned Women for America ) which claimed that the NEA was foisting a ``pro-homosexual agenda'' on public schools. The vote to repeal B-9 came after three hours of debate on July 5. NEA members also deleted references to history months for other groups, including blacks and women. **** CWA wasn't mollified [we told you so!!! The P.E.R.S.O.N. Project] by the resolution's removal. In a press release last week with the headline, ``Teacher's union ambushes American families,'' the group said the inclusion of gays and lesbians in NEA's anti-discrimination resolutions was tantamount to ``celebrat(ing) the gay and lesbian lifestyle throughout the entire school year, rather than in one designated month.'' --------------------------------------- *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ OK TO RE-POST.
