(EDC), has shaped educational policy and practice through publication and dissemination of gender-fair educational materials. This year's funding from the U.S. Department of Education enables the Center to initiate new national programs and services, continuing its innovative work. The only federally funded gender equity dissemination center, the WEEA Equity Resource Center supports the Women's Educational Equity Act (WEEA) Program. An exciting new development, the contract award expands the Center's national role in the discussion of best and promising education practices. "We're ready to show how gender equity works for all students," says Katherine Hanson, director of the Center. Formerly known as the WEEA Publishing Center, this expanded scope of work is reflected in the Center's new name. The Center will work closely with 18 WEEA Program grantees from across the country, continuing its technical assistance in research, marketing and dissemination. The projects cover a range of topics, including sexual harassment, career education, students with disabilities, product revision and basic gender equity awareness. Twelve of the grants are systemic reform projects focusing specifically on gender equity, representing one of the largest groups of education reform projects in the country. In an effort to inform the country about the best resources, the Center will develop one of two national pilot tests for expert panels and national discussion forums. Mandated under legislation for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), the expert panel on gender equity will develop criteria for and identify exemplary and promising educational equity products. In partnership with other national organizations, the Center will present a series of national discussion forums that will focus on the implications of specific education issues for gender equity. "As educators, we all want to know what works. These initiatives will contribute a great deal to that understanding," explains Ms. Hanson. Electronic services, outreach and networking will be expanded under the contract as well. This fall, the Center will develop and maintain a comprehensive World Wide Web site containing information on and links to gender equity resources and services. Beginning in January 1996, the Center's electronic discussion list, EDEQUITY, will introduce a series of online panel discussions on equity and diversity in education. These new developments enhance the Center's national dissemination focus. The WEEA Equity Resource Center will provide gender equity materials from a number of sources as well as those it publishes through the WEEA Program. In addition to the Working Papers Series and WEEA Digest, the Center will publish a series of briefing reports, highlighting results from the national forums, expert panel and EDEQUITY panels. The Women's Educational Equity Act (WEEA) Program is a federal program dedicated to reducing educational disparity for women and girls. Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), is an international nonprofit research and development organization. Nationally recognized for excellence, EDC joins research with practice to meet today's and tomorrow's challenges in education, health, technology, human rights and the environment.
