These Databases are primarily intended to serve as a starting point for people seeking support for HIV/AIDS education, prevention, service provision, and information dissemination. The grantmaking agency should be contacted for further information and application procedures. The Clearinghouse makes these databases available to the public through their electronic bulletin board service, NAC ONLINE. Information and assistance about the Clearinghouse and NAC ONLINE can be obtained by calling a Reference Specialist at 1-800-458-5231 or 1800-243-7012 (deaf access/TDD). If you know of opportunities that we do not have in our databases, please contact us at aidsinfo@cdcnac.aspensys.com. This week, three new funds loaded to the Funding Database. FUND NO: PA-95-061 DESCRIPTION: The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) invites grant applications from investigators for research on mental disorders, symptoms, and behavioral, cognitive and social concerns in women across the lifespan. The NIMH encourages research on underserved populations: minority, rural, and homeless women; and women who are at risk for HIV, who are HIV positive, and who have AIDS. The NIMH has identified the following research areas related to women as needing attention: basic research; epidemiology and psychopathology; mood, anxiety, and personality disorders; psychiatric disorders and reproductive health; eating disorders; Alzheimer's Disease and related dementia; schizophrenia; sleep; comorbidity with physical illness; violence and abuse of women and girls; prevention research; treatment efficacy; treatment effectiveness and service use; and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Studies on the subject are needed on: 1) the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods to better describe women at risk or seropositive for HIV infection in order to develop successful, cost-effective prevention and treatment efforts; 2) relation of the stigma of HIV among women to coping, their potential familial roles as health educators and health caretakers, family consequences, and use of services; 3) individual and family factors contributing to high-risk sexual behavior in adolescent girls; 4) acceptance and implementation of effective female-controlled methods of reducing or preventing STDs or HIV; 5) prevalence of comorbid STDs with chronic mental illness, personality disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, and past sexual abuse; and 6) ways that infected women make decisions about reproductive options, place children in caretaking contexts, and prepare for their own and/or their children's deaths. FUND NO: PA-95-057 DESCRIPTION: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) announces the availability of funds to stimulate research on social and environmental factors influencing the drug injecting and sexual HIV risk behaviors of drugs users and their sexual partners in order to develop more effective HIV prevention strategies. NIDA is especially interested in improving knowledge of factors determining the temporal variability in risk behaviors and underlying behaviors that protect against HIV transmission. Studies should be focused on hypothesis generation and testing in order to discover and clarify determinants of HIV-related risk behaviors. Research may examine one or more social, cultural, economic, psychological, environmental, or physiological factors. Applications using, as the unit of study, the dyad or social network within which risk behaviors occur are encouraged. Studies that will enhance understanding of why some individuals engage in certain types of risk behaviors while others encountering many of the same influences do not are also encouraged. The knowledge gained from funded studies is intended to identify factors amenable to intervention. Thus, research should be applicable to public health interventions and intervention research. The developmental phases of risk behaviors also need to be studied to determine when transitions occur and when would be the best opportunities for intervention and change. TYPE OF FUNDS AWARDED: Federal ----------------------------------------------------------------- **************** FUND INFORMATION ****************** ACCESSION NO: S 05723-002 FUND TITLE: Research on Comorbid Mental and Drug Abuse Disorders. FUND NO: PA-95-055 DESCRIPTION: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) announce the availability of funds to support research on comorbid mental and drug abuse disorders. This program has four aims: 1) to explore and identify etiological and neurobiological factors associated with the co-occurrence of drug abuse/addiction and mental disorders; 2) to develop new treatment and prevention interventions for populations afflicted with these disorders; 3) to develop effective strategies and procedures for managing the impact of HIV/AIDS on those with comorbid mental and addictive disorders and the impact of comorbid mental and addictive disorders on persons with HIV/AIDS; and 4) to assess existing drug abuse and mental health treatment interventions and services for persons with comorbid disorders. Studies may be based in a variety of public and private settings, and may involve drug abusing populations with comorbid mental and addictive disorders or other treatment/non-treatment populations. Research is encouraged on HIV/AIDS issues, including transmission, disease progression, risk-behavior change and treatment, in drug abusing populations with comorbid mental disorders. Additionally, research in appropriate populations may address changes in HIV risk conditions and elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the effects of comorbidities on risk. The objective of the latter is to design effective prevention and treatment strategies. Other studies under this program announcement may focus on the etiology, prevention, treatment, and neurobiology of comorbid mental and addictive disorders. The use of multiple outcome domains is encouraged.
