Extract of an Amnesty International
report: "TURKEY: No security
without rights", Amnesty International has received many allegations of brutal treatment of transvestites, many of whom live in Beyoglu district of Istanbul. In November 1995, 12 tansvestites were detained and taken to Beyoglu Police Headquarters where they were reportedly forced to undress, hosed with ice-cold water and severely beaten. In December 1995 Seyfettin Turan, Yasar Pinarbas, Ilhami Kaya, Murat Karafarli, Ahmet Bozdogan, Selim Hisar, Ali Bozkus and Muharrem Kalayci filed complaints with the Beyoglu Public Prosecutor. Several of them reported that their hair was pulled out and that they were beaten on their genitals. Medical reports supported their complaints. On page 38: Photographs undertitled: |
